Fall Weather Essentials
As fall brings us closer to winter, you will probably see your ferret go through some changes. He will probably get a softer, plusher coat, and he will put on weight. These changes are directly related to the shorter days and cooler temperatures.
While ferrets are generally more comfortable in fall than any other time of year, there are some products you will want to keep handy.
Some ferrets will shed significantly before growing their winter coats in. Because excessive shedding increases the risk of hairballs, always keep some hairball remedy or laxative around.
Though we often think that fleas are no longer an issue in October or November, there are some areas of the country that have flea issues all the way up until December. Protect your ferret from fleas and ticks by using preventives.
For those areas that quickly get cold during the fall months, dry skin caused by the use of heaters can be just as much of a problem for our ferrets as it is for us. To keep your ferret's skin moisturized, invest in a humidifier for the room their cage is in, and use a product like FerreTone or another skin and coat supplement. You can also try using conditioning sprays.
Even though ferrets are very comfortable at cooler temperatures, they still like lots of comfortable bedding to snuggle up in for a nice nap. Make sure to fill your ferret's cage with blankets, hammocks, sleep sacks, and other bedding items to keep her warm and cozy on cooler fall days and nights.
